1. Improving traceability through new technologies and systems

One continuing development is the use of new technologies to improve the safety and traceability of the food supply chain. That includes blockchain-style traceability from farm to fork, and sensors that show whether food is stored and transported under the right conditions.

2. Reducing food waste for safety and sustainability

Food waste has both an environmental cost and a food safety cost. Businesses are tightening inventory management and date labelling so food is used before it becomes unsafe, rather than treating waste as only a sustainability topic.

3. Emphasising education and training

Alongside technology, food safety still depends on people who understand why the rules exist. That means programmes for people working in the industry, and clearer information for consumers on how to handle and store food safely.
